Designed to be worn during and after training, the main aim of compression gear is to increase blood flow – moving oxygen to, and waste away from, tired muscles. During tough sessions and stretching exercises, these tight-fitting baselayers also help to support the muscles, cutting the impact vibrations that can cause more of that micro damage that leads to delayed onset muscle soreness.

The best compression tights and tops can therefore help fight muscle fatigue, reduce post-workout muscle soreness and speed up recovery between sessions.

While plenty of athletes and trainers swear by compression gear, the scientific jury is still out on whether it actually enhances performance during workouts. However, there’s much more compelling evidence for the positive impact it has on post-workout recovery.

Benefits of compression tops

The best compression tops feature sweat-wicking, quick-drying, breathable technical fabrics that help regulate body temperature in hot and cold conditions. So you can stay dry and comfortable, no matter how intense your session.

When you’re buying compression gear, the first thing to consider is the level of compression it offers. Not all compression training gear offers medical-grade compression – something to look for if your main aim is promoting recovery. Some compression tops are suitable to wear during and after workouts. Others – often the tighter-fitting, more constrictive gear – are better used for recovery alone.

Fit is more important than with regular baselayers, so pay close attention to the sizing. Good compression gear requires more detailed measurements than regular baselayers and workout apparel. So be sure to check the sizing charts and don’t automatically go for your usual size.

Under Armour HeatGear Long Sleeve

BUY IT NOW:

OVERALL: 4/5

Materials: 90% polyester, 10% elastane | Sizes: S to XXL | Features: HeatGear fabric / stretch-mesh back and side panels / Anti-odor technology | Colours: Black / downpour grey

It can’t quite match the compression levels of the 2XU Core Compression or the Skins Series 5, but the Under Armour HeatGear Long Sleeve offers a snug, protective and supportive fit without being overly restrictive.

The fabric feels smooth, soft and cool to the touch with no sign of chafing. It has plenty of flex and supports a range of movement, thanks to mesh panels, and is the quickest drying compression top on test.

BEST FOR COMFORT & DURABILITY

Castore Long Sleeve Base Layer

BUY IT NOW:

$35 / £35 / castore.com

Comfort: 5/5
Compression: 3/5
Sweat-wicking: 3/5
OVERALL: 4/5

Materials: 86% polyester, 14% elastane | Sizes: S to 2XL | Features: Flatlock seams / vented back panels | Colours: Grey / lilac / black

The Castore long-sleeve baselayer is a warm and durable option though it lacks the top-end compression benefits of the likes of the 2XU Core Compression and Skins Series 5. However it features the same fabric and technical design as its pricier Roebus compression alternative so is worth considering.

The high-stretch fabric is soft, shiny and a little more substantial than most. It has a comfortable feel, with excellent fit and support, as well as flatlock seams to avoid chafing.

A good option for layering on warmth on colder training days, its cut is longer than usual, hanging well below the waistline to avoid riding up and exposing your midriff.

BEST FOR TIGHT BUDGETS

Gymshark Element Base Layer

BUY IT NOW:

$30 / £22 / gymshark.com

Comfort: 4/5
Compression: 3/5
Sweat-wicking: 4/5

Materials: 88% recycled polyester, 12% elastane | Sizes: XS to 3XL | Features: Flatlock seams / elasticated waist and cuffs | Colours: Silhouette grey / evening blue / black white / grey print / Tuscan teal / Atlantic blue / blue

The most budget-friendly option on test unsurprisingly can’t compete with the out-and-out compression tops but still punches well above its weight.

The Gymshark Element is a snug-fitting top that offers decent muscle support, flexibility and warmth. It gets kudos for using recycled polyester, which feels smooth, soft and stretchy. We’re impressed with how well it dries and wicks away sweat too – better than some tops that are twice the price.

You’ll be spoilt for choice with seven sizes, as well as eight colour schemes, including a grey camo print.

We test the best sports boxers and moisture-wicking underwear, designed to give you ultimate support and comfort however you work out…

Men, listen up. We know you can hit the gym in your old cotton not-so-tighty whities and survive. But life’s too short to be suffering uncomfortable undies when you’re putting your shoulder to the workout wheel. Whether you’re pushing for your back squat one rep max, or you’ve got everything hanging from the chin-up bar, you deserve the ultimate comfort and unshakeable support you get from a proper pair of the best sports boxers.

That’s why we’ve tried and tested the latest sports boxer shorts and workout briefs, to bring you our pick of best men’s underwear for working out.

RELATED CONTENT:

 2. Best gym shoes
 3. Best sweatpants and joggers

Benefits of moisture-wicking underwear

When it comes to working out, your underwear may not be the first thing on your mind. But let’s be honest: chafing, discomfort and a lack of support are not what you need when you’re working hard. That’s why investing in a good pair of sports boxers or moisture-wicking underwear is a smart move.

Sporting the right undies during your sweat sesh not only offers superior comfort and support but moisture-wicking materials like polyester, nylon, polyamide and merino wool keep you cool and dry, cutting your risk of chafing and irritation.

Some longer baselayer-style briefs even offer compression for targeted support for your muscles, improving circulation and reducing fatigue.

Found your undies? Now check out the best running shorts for men

Then there’s fit. Sports underwear is designed to move with you. Whether you’re running, jumping or lifting weights, the last thing you want is to be constantly adjusting your boxers mid-set. With a snug fit and stretchy material, sports underwear stays put without feeling restrictive, so you can focus on your workout without distractions – or wedgies.

And let’s not forget about hygiene. Sweaty, damp underwear is a breeding ground for stink-making bacteria. Some sports underwear features antimicrobial fabrics that combat odour. Though you’re still going to need to wash them regularly and the best workout smalls survive multiple spin cycles without losing their shape.

These Are The Best Gym Shoes For 2023 https://mensfitness.co.uk/gear/best-gym-shoes/ Thu, 25 May 2023 09:00:04 +0000 https://mensfitness.co.uk/?p=12315 From strong-and-stable lifters to light-and-fast treadmill runners, these are the best gym shoes for any workout

The post These Are The Best Gym Shoes For 2023 appeared first on MensFitness.

From strong-and-stable lifters to light-and-fast treadmill runners, these are the best gym shoes for any workout…

If you’re serious about the time you spend in the gym – whether you’re pounding the treadmill or picking weights up off the floor – a battered old pair of trainers aren’t going to do you any favours. For dynamic, high-intensity movements, you need a pair of the best gym shoes that are lightweight and responsive and can handle quick changes of direction.

Get kitted out for the gym with the best shorts for men

By contrast, heavy lifting – particularly squats and deadlifts – calls for a robust, flat-bottomed shoe that grips to the ground and allows you to drive through your heels.

To help you make the best decision for your workout needs, we’ve pulled together the following buyer’s guide, featuring the very best gym shoes for 2023.

The difference between gym shoes and running shoes

If your main goal at the gym is to pound the treadmill before maybe spending some time on the exercise mats, a classic running shoe will do the job. However, if your workouts extend beyond treadmill running, you’ll want to get more specific.

There are a few key differences between a gym shoe and a running shoe. Think about the type of action that a running shoe is made for: it supports forward-going, heel-to-toe movements, rather than lateral movement or upward propulsion. A higher heel-toe drop provides a running shoe with extra cushioning and shock absorption, protecting the runner’s joints and ligaments from injury.

Train in comfort and style with the best sweatpants and joggers

Heel cushioning is particularly important, as is the use of lightweight mesh materials – a running shoe need to be light and breathable for those long, sweaty runs.

A gym shoe, however, is made with multidirectional and lateral movement in mind. Generally, it’ll have a lower heel-toe drop and a smaller cushion, which gives athletes a better range of motion. Typically, a wider toe box also helps to support quick directional changes.

Now that you’re clear on the main boxes that need ticking, here’s our pick of the best gym shoes for 2023.

Fit: 4.5/5

Materials: Recycled polyester upper / plastic-free laces | Weight: 263g | Colours: 5 available | Sizes: 6.5-14.5 (US) / 6-14 (UK)

Vivobarefoot does things a little differently when it comes to gym and running shoes, creating feet-shaped shoes, not shoe-shaped ones. It’s Primus range features wide toe boxes, ultra-thin soles and flexible uppers, and the Primus Lite Knit employs these to good effect as a lifting shoe.

Weighing half as most of its rivals, it still provides a strong and stable base from which to push through. Those flexible uppers allow better ankle mobility than most built-up training shoes too. Just be prepared for a bedding-in period if you’ve not worn Vivobarefoot shoes before.

Pair of Reebok Legacy Lifter II

Reebok Legacy Lifter II

BUY IT NOW:

$200 / £150 / reebok.com

Fit: 4/5
Comfort: 3/5
Performance: 4.5/5
OVERALL: 4/5

Material: Textile upper / TPU heel clip / rubber outsole | Weight: 575g | Colours: White and black / white and red / grey and blue / black and grey / navy and red | Sizes: 5½ to 13

This is an out and out lifter, pure and simple, it offers excellent stability and a locked-in feel to keep you gripped to the ground at all times.

That said, the thick, heavy feel of the shoe means it’s not the most comfortable when you’re walking between workout stations (though that’s not an uncommon sacrifice made with specialist weight-lifting trainers). And the bulkiness of the Reebok Legacy Lifter II might not be to everyone’s tastes; they’re just too heavy for a more generalised workout.

However, if you’re gearing up for a day of heavy lifting, you’ll do well to find a better option than this shoe.

Best Exercise Mats https://mensfitness.co.uk/gear/best-exercise-mats/ Wed, 24 May 2023 14:55:58 +0000 https://mensfitness.co.uk/?p=14865 Suitable for yoga and Pilates or HIIT and weight session – for use at home, in the gym or on the go

The post Best Exercise Mats appeared first on MensFitness.

]]>
Suitable for yoga and pilates or HIIT and plyometrics – for use at home, in the gym or on the go – these are the best exercise mats for 2023…

Unless you want to risk discomfort or injury, you can’t really carry out prone stretching exercises or more dynamic plyometric exercises on a hard gym or home floor.

Create your own fitness studio with the best home gym equipment

The best way to perfect your pilates or hammer out your HIIT sessions in comfort and safety is with an exercise mat. Despite their relative simplicity, though, not all mats are made equal. They vary in dimensions, cushioning and thickness, material, grip, weight and portability, so it’s important to find one that suits your needs.

What to look for in the best exercise mats

Grip

A good grip between your hands, feet or other contact points and the mat surface is key to performing exercises with confidence, and therefore with proper form. The last thing you need when stretching out your hip flexors is a knee or groin strain caused by slipping off the mat. Look for options with a non-slip or textured surface that let you plant your limbs with confidence.

Stability

Stability is another important factor to consider, as a mat that moves beneath you is as likely to annoy, distract or even injure you as one with little grip on the top layer. Heavier rubber or cork mats tend to lie flat more easily without curling at the corners like lighter foam ones, for example. Look out for mats that tend to bunch up in the middle, too – you want to avoid trip hazards mid-burpee if possible.

Kit out your home on a budget with the best cheap home gym equipment

Comfort

There’s usually a tradeoff between comfort and portability, as thicker, heavier mats are harder to roll up and carry. But don’t ignore the comfort factor, particularly if you plan to work out on hard surfaces. There should be enough cushioning to do crunches without crippling your spine, but not too much that you lose your balance holding one-legged yoga poses. The average mat tends to be about 4-8mm thick, though there are some exceptions here.

Durability

How long your exercise mat lasts will depend greatly on the material it’s made from and its thickness. Rubber mats, or those made from other natural fibres such as jute, will most likely last longer than foam ones. You’ll be more likely to take a lighter foam mat out to evening classes too, which will add to its wear and tear. Durability is worth bearing in mind especially if you plan to wear shoes on it, or to use weights or medicine balls.

Portability

Another thing to consider is portability. The mats in this list range from 500g to well over 3kg so some are easier to lug around than others. Not all mats come with straps or a carry handle either (though sometimes a bag or strap is an optional extra). It depends what’s important to you – if you want to do regular classes after work, you’ll want a smaller, lighter and probably less durable mat than one set up permanently in your home gym.

Best Workout Clothes https://mensfitness.co.uk/gear/best-workout-clothes/ Wed, 24 May 2023 11:49:58 +0000 https://mensfitness.co.uk/?p=17025 Breathable, lightweight, sweat-wicking, stretchy fabrics with minimal seams are the way to go

The post Best Workout Clothes appeared first on MensFitness.

The best workout clothes will allow you to stay cool and comfortable while giving you extra support and complete flexibility of movement…

Whether you’re just starting your fitness journey or are a seasoned gym-goer, the best workout clothes will help you get the most from your sessions. Cotton tees, baggy shorts and old trainers just won’t cut it when you start ramping up your HIIT workouts or weights programme. You need dedicated performance-focused training gear that will move with you and keep you cool and comfortable.

Clothes not made with performance in mind will be distracting at best, but will more like be restrictive, unsupportive and uncomfortable. Trainers won’t support quick lateral movements, tees will get wet, heavy and start to chafe and shorts won’t wick sweat away and restrict your range of movement.

What to look for in the best workout clothes

That’s why the best workout clothes can only enhance your workout. You want stretch, flex and breathability. You want comfort, light weight and support. So look for technical clothes made from advanced sweat-wicking fabrics including nylon, elastane and polyester (or natural fibres like merino wool). Look for flattened or minimal seams to stop chafing. And look for a fit that is close and supportive with good coverage, without being restrictive.

All kitted out? You’ll need one of the best gym bags too

Don’t forget shoes, either. Unless you’re focused on lifting you don’t want dedicated lifting shoes, which are too rigid for most other workouts. Instead, for gym shoes look for ones that offer lateral support, or for running you want good flex and cushioning through your stride. Both should be lightweight, with breathable uppers.

Best Gym Shirts And Workout Tees https://mensfitness.co.uk/gear/best-gym-shirts-and-workout-tees/ Wed, 24 May 2023 11:32:50 +0000 https://mensfitness.co.uk/?p=16864 High performance tees are suited to session on gym floors or adventures in the great outdoors…

The post Best Gym Shirts And Workout Tees appeared first on MensFitness.

]]>
Just because you can throw on any old T-shirt for your gym session, doesn’t mean you should. For those who want to train in comfort and style, these are the best gym shirts and workout tees…

You can stick on any old scraggy t-shirt to hit the gym but wearing the best workout clothes you can will make a difference to how you perform. Whether you’re swinging heavy metal, plodding pavements or sweating out demons in a hardcore spin session, it’s hard to get in the zone unless you feel comfortable and confident.

Dropping a few extra quid on a good technical workout tee is a smart move. That’s why we suited up and tested eight of the latest fitness tees to bring you our pick of the best training tops for any workout.

Benefits of the best gym shirts

When you’re hitting the gym floor, the right gear can make all the difference. You could just stick on any old cotton T-shirt you find at the back of the drawer. But if you want comfort, performance and a bit of confidence-boosting style, investing in the right technical workout tee is the smarter option.

Unlike regular cotton T-shirts, technical gym tops tend to be made from more advanced moisture-wicking fabrics, or sometimes high-end merino wool. They’re designed to be light, to move with your body and keep you cool and dry during even the most intense sessions.

So when you’re knocking out your umpteenth burpy or that final sick-making interval – and hating yourself, your PT and the universe – your gym kit won’t add unnecessary discomfort, chafing and soggy misery into the mix.

It’s not just moisture-wicking that makes technical workout T-shirts the smarter option. They often come with other features that make them a worthwhile investment. That includes breathable mesh panels that improve airflow and ventilation and a workout-friendly fit that guarantees a good, unrestricted range of movement, leaving you to concentrate on the task at hand.

Pair your new tee with one of the best shorts for men. Want something longer? These are the best sweatpants

Some training tops are treated with anti-odor technology to keep you feeling fresh even after a gruelling session and you can even get compression tops that support your muscles – and make you feel more compact and supported like a Marvel superhero.

The best technical workout T-shirts are also now made to be versatile. Not only are they great for working out, but they can also be stylish and comfortable enough for everyday wear. So if you’re looking to upgrade your workout wardrobe, a few high-quality technical tees is the way to go.

Resistance bands vs weights: Find out what’s best for you…

At its core, building a muscle’s strength requires you to put it under some sort of load. The simplest way to do that can be done with bodyweight workouts – hence the popularity of Pilates. However, if you’ve reached a strength ceiling or you’re looking to increase the intensity of your workouts, you need to add some resistance into the mix. Popular means of doing so are with either resistance bands or weights (both free weights and machines). But what are the pros and cons of each? And is one better than the other?

Resistance bands vs weights: what muscles are targeted?

An easy way to differentiate between the two is what they target when used. Weights tend to focus on the big muscle groups. On the other hand, resistance bands are able to direct tension to smaller, supporting muscles. These are often overlooked or missed during heavier lifts or dumbbell movements.

“For me, free weights are king – and that’s what you’ve always got in gyms,” says Darren Bruce, PT at Third Space. “But there are so many different things you can do with resistance bands.”

Discover the best dumbbell exercises for every body part

Benefits of resistance bands

Bruce believes that the biggest benefit of resistance bands is the fact that you can use them in multiple planes. “With a dumbbell or a barbell, you’re pretty much linear – straight up or straight down, out in front or pulled back. Whereas if I need to move, for instance, diagonally at 45 degrees, with a resistance band leashed onto a pole, you can move very dynamically with it at an angle.”

Their adaptability allows you to work every body part. In turn, this helps to build the strength of stabilising muscles, minimising muscle imbalances and the risk of injury that they can cause.

RELATED CONTENT:

He adds that resistance bands with lighter tension are great for stretching, mobility work and rehabilitation (“a dumbbell is not going to work for all those things”). Equally, their relatively low cost and small footprint can make them great investments for those who want to start working out but might not have the confidence to join a gym.

“If you want to work out at home and you don’t have the money for the cost for dumbbells,” adds Bruce, “then I would say that bands are an extremely effective tool to use.”

He says that those at the start of their fitness journeys probably have the most to gain from using resistance bands. “If you’re not an experienced lifter, then even a light band is going to have a lot of effects for you”. But that doesn’t mean that they don’t have their uses for avid gym-goers.

“I may use power bands when it comes to helping my clients do pull-ups,” says Bruce. “You can suspend it from the top, put it under their knees and that can provide some assistance.”

Benefits of weights

There are occasions when free weights are better to use than a resistance band – particularly when lifting heavy. Free weights use gravity to create resistance. However, that means there are easier and harder sections of each lift. For instance, with dumbbells, at the very top of the lift is when it’s at its lightest. Resistance bands provide a constant level of tension throughout.

“The really thick resistance bands are brutal to move – to keep the control is actually quite difficult,” says Bruce. “If you’re a slightly experienced lifter, you’ll probably need to [decrease the resistance] slightly. This means you’re going to need to do a lot more volume [than when using free weights].”

Ultimately, the best approach is to use a combination of free weights and resistance bands. While the former is perceived to be the stereotypical way to build muscle and strength, the latter is a vital tool that can improve overall stability, reduce injuries and make you a well-rounded athlete.

Best Resistance Bands With Handles https://mensfitness.co.uk/gear/resistance-bands-with-handles/ Wed, 24 May 2023 08:30:16 +0000 https://mensfitness.co.uk/?p=16352 Using resistance bands with handles lets you add dynamism and intensity to your strength training sessions…

Get to grips with the best resistance bands with handles for locked-on strength gains at home…

Resistance bands are enjoying a renaissance due to their low-cost portability. There’s also virtually no end to the number of strength training exercises you can perform with bands – from the comfort of your own home.

Whereas resistance bands were traditionally just that – bands or strips of material (usually rubber) that provide varied resistance – now resistance bands with handles are becoming increasingly popular.

With resistance bands with handles – often called ‘resistance tubes’ – you can perform most of the exercises you can with regular bands. But by being able to gain better leverage, you can exert greater force and get a more intense workout.

While bands like the Amazon Basics TPE Resistance Band set are one of the cheapest pieces of kit for resistance exercises, they are open ended and can be difficult to maintain a good grip on the ends for certain exercises. Others, like the Eono Fabric Resistance Bands, are looped bands and ideal for leg exercises, but their length can be limiting in terms of the range of resistance exercises you can perform.

Advantages of resistance bands with handles

The best resistance bands with handles are ideal for more intense sessions where you want a firmer grip on the band and require a large range of motion. They tend to have a greater resistance than simple bands.

Handles also allow you to anchor one end of the band for a greater range of exercises. Some even come with interchangeable ends, so you can swap from a handle to a door anchor, or maybe a leg strap to increase your exercise options.

Disadvantages of resistance bands with handles

Resistance bands with handles typically have narrower bands or tubes than regular resistance bands. So if they rub against your skin they tend to exert greater pressure, and can cause red marks and discomfort.

Although they’re less likely to snap than regular bands, they can do so with greater force. So always check for small tears before you start your workout.

TRX RIP Trainer

Versatility: 4/5

This core annihilator in disguise turns traditional moves into asymmetric exercises. In doing so it focuses the resistance on one side of your body, forcing you to compensate and develop muscles you’d usually work with pilates or other core-focused training.

Like most TRX kit, the RIP Trainer is covered by a six-year warranty and comes with a 20lb (9kg) medium chord. You’re not stuck with that, though as light (15lb / 7kg), heavy (25lb / 11kg), extra-heavy (38lb / 17kg) and XX-heavy (50lb / 23kg) cords are available separately at around £15 each.

The included door anchor and carabiner give you options to use it indoors and out. Just bear in mind the system requires a few clear square meters in all directions.

Under Armour SlipSpeed

Pros:

 • Great versatility
 • Unique collapsible heel

Cons:

 • Unique fit feels a bit fussy
 • Foot hold lacks a little security

Fit: 3/5
Comfort: 4/5
Performance: 4/5
OVERALL: 4/5

Like the mullet of training shoes, the Under Armour SlipSpeed is business in the front, party in the back. This innovative gym shoe switches effortlessly from beast mode to recovery comfort in the flick of its ‘crushable’ heel.

Under Armour SlipSpeed features

Part performance gym trainer, part post-workout recovery shoe, the Under Armour SlipSpeed’s stand-out feature is a unique convertible heel that folds virtually flat, letting you flip between training mode and a casual Crocs-like recovery mode with ease.

In training mode, the SlipSpeed is built to be a capable all-rounder, handling everything from moderate strength training to aerobic exercises and even short runs. In recovery mode, it’s designed to look sharp and deliver comfort for general kicking about.

The SlipSpeed’s 2mm drop midsole is made from a sizeable wedge of the same lightweight but durable, supercritical Flow foam that you’ll find in the Under Armour Velociti Wind 2 and Velociti Elite running shoes. Like those shoes, the Flow foam is durable and grippy enough to remove the need for extra rubber. So there’s no outsole, saving weight. However, at 10.8oz/306g these are still comparatively heavy and from our tests, we’re not confident those soles will handle too much rope-climb abrasion.

The reinforced supportive mesh uppers have engineered venting to boost breathability. Your foot slips into an Iso-Chill fabric booty that gives them a nicely padded neoprene wrap feel that’s comfortable for training with or without socks.

There’s also a BOA Fit lacing system with a 12-point lockdown system that helps dial in the fit – at least across the mid-forefoot.

The SlipSpeed are also machine washable and come with a laundry bag. In testing, I ran them through the wash once and they came out fine.

Red Under Armour SlipSpeed gym shoe

That collapsible heel allows you to instantly transition from locked-in performance to slip-on recovery

Under Armour SlipSpeed performance

I put these shoes through a range of workouts that included lower body (back squats, deadlifts, weighted lunges), some basic plyometrics (box jumps, jump lunges) and a few 5km runs on the treadmill and the tarmac. I also wore them in recovery mode while going about the daily grind.

This SlipSpeed tries to cover a lot of bases. Not just with that workout-recovery mode mash-up but its all-round training capabilities too. So it’s probably no surprise that when it comes to performance, they’re a bit jack-of-all, master of none. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, though.

If you’re looking for one shoe that’s versatile enough to tackle most of what you’ll chuck at in the gym and daily life, this is a solid workhorse with some stylish flare. They’re OK at most things and there’s something great about being able to go from gym to the office or cafe without having to change up your footwear.

The fit is a little fussy. In workout mode, the BOA laces hold well across the top of the midfoot and the ability to tweak the lace lockdown with more precision is great if you like a slightly different hold for different drills. The toe box also feels a touch long and sometimes the front of the SlipSpeed can feel a bit disconnected. You might fix that by going half a size down, but if you’ve got wide feet the narrowish fit might rule that out.

In recovery mode, I found the open heel had a tendency to slip – a bit like a Croc when it’s not in sport mode. That took some getting used to but they’re plenty comfy for casual wear.

During workouts, I found the Flow midsole platform stable enough to handle deadlifts and squats, though there are better weightlifting shoes for sure and if you’re moving big weights, you might want a shoe with a less compressive midsole.

They also offered enough grip, protection and response for the more explosive, higher impact HIIT and plyo drills like box jumps and squat jumps. Though there are lighter and more agile trainers out there.

When it comes to running, the ride underfoot definitely benefits from that run-friendly Flow foam, though I found the fussy fit and lower drop made them better for shorter, easier efforts. I’m also not sure I’d lace them up for more than a casual 5km or the odd set of treadmill intervals.

Overall, this isn’t the very best training shoe you can buy right now, but it definitely brings something happily unique to the table.

Sweatpants vs Joggers: What’s The Difference? https://mensfitness.co.uk/gear/sweatpants-vs-joggers-whats-the-difference/ Wed, 24 May 2023 07:00:01 +0000 https://mensfitness.co.uk/?p=11390 If you are looking for athletic wear for working out or staying in, it's worth considering the differences between sweatpants vs joggers

The post Sweatpants vs Joggers: What’s The Difference? appeared first on MensFitness.

]]>
If you’re looking for longer athletic wear for working out or staying in, it’s well worth considering the differences between sweatpants vs joggers…

When talking about athletic wear, the terms sweatpants and joggers are often used interchangeably. They’re both essentially activewear, allowing you to train in comfort and style.

And they’re also equally suited to lounging on the sofa, as they’re both made with downtime in mind.

But if you’re looking for longer athletic or loungewear, it’s worth looking out for the subtle differences between the two.

Although both styles feature elasticised or cinched ankles, the main differences between joggers and sweatpants are materials and overall fit – and both these factors hint at their intended use.

Whether you opt for sweatpants or joggers, put them to good use with these best resistance band exercises

Differences between sweatpants vs joggers

While the term sweatpants implies they’re made for exercising and sweating in – and that is indeed what they were originally made for – sweatpants are actually the slightly less athletic-focused of the two, and more suited to lounging.

Sweatpants tend to be made of thicker fabric to keep your legs warm. Joggers, on the other hand, are typically made of thinner materials to provide breathability and keep the legs cool.

In terms of fit, sweatpants are usually baggy, while joggers are form-fitting and tapered. So while both are a great choice for casual streetwear, it’s joggers that allow you move and keep cool more easily. As such they’re more suited to working out, particularly with any intensity.

man wearing workout joggers

Joggers tend to be made from lighter, stretchier fabric than sweatpants

RELATED: Best 7-inch inseam shorts

Sweatpants

 • Best for outdoor warm-ups
 • Best for lounging in comfort

Sweatpants generally feature a thick type of cotton that’s comfy and soft, ideal for staying warm during colder months. And although they cinch at the ankle like joggers, they’re baggier, less shaped and don’t taper down the leg.

While they will often have pockets, they tend not to be as feature-rich as joggers either. The thicker the fabric, obviously the slightly more cumbersome they will feel if doing more intense workouts.

Sweatpants are ideal for outdoor warm-ups, rather than anything too gruelling. They’re the kind of athletic wear you’d take off once you get down to the real hard graft.

Joggers

 • Best for track and gym workouts
 • Best for manouevrability

Unlike sweatpants, joggers are available in a whole host of materials – from cotton-poly blends and polyester to elastane, lycra, twill, or even silk or satin. These materials are chosen specifically for their performance benefits: light weight, stretchiness, breathability and comfort.

Often joggers won’t have the same insulating properties as sweatpants, but they’ll tend to be lighter, less cumbersome and with better moisture-wicking capabilities. They’ll usually have relaxed hips and be tapered, too, to give more of a tailored look.
